Miss E's Beats & Pieces

by Miss E

"These phat beats--back 'n' forth, back 'n' forth goes the needle-- ascending, peaking, descending...transcending..."

Eclectic is the first word most people use to describe KUSF. When you tune in you never know what you're going to hear! It could be your favorite punk song from 1984 or some classic ragtime tune you didn't even know you were into! Either way, 90.3 on your FM dial is the place for you if you're into exploring extreme flavors.

A word of acknowledgment must be given for the existence of such a groundbreaking soundstream. KUSF truly is an Oasis for CULTURE and COMMUNITY. Culture thrives here, amidst a barren desert of commercialism and bottom lines present in broadcast media today. It shines like a rainbow...

The culture that I've been passionate about sharing on the radio frequency is that of electronic music -- call it what you will: techno music, dance music -- just DON'T call it "electronica"! KUSF New Music is where I first had a chance to explore the technique of DJing, and three hours is a nice chunk of time to program different beats. After-hours graveyard shifts on the air are a sweet memory! A great chance to share all kinds of abstract hip-hop, downtempo dub, jungle and ambient tunes. New Music DJs that I count on to mix up all sorts of beats and breaks are Maneesh the Twister as well as J-Boogie and Cathy Cohn.

On Friday nights as my friends and I gear up for the evening's festivities, we listen to Andrew & Tomas rockin' the airwaves with the latest in urban jazz and dance music on the Friday Night Session, which airs from 9:30PM to midnight every week.

On the way home from the club on that same night, you can lull yourself into dreamland with the spacy, atmospheric melodies of Moondance, airing from 3am to 8am on Saturday mornings.

In recent years we've witnessed the growing hype in electronic music. We've seen big stations and corporations jump on the bandwagon, staking their claim with the latest "fad." Frankly, they are the only ones treating it as such. Electronic music has deep roots in our modern century. Today's contributors to KUSF have played a big part in sharing the knowledge of this culture and movement that has evolved through the decades. Maneesh and Tomas did a fantastic job in the summer of 1998 with their Spotlight on the history of electronic music. Spotlight airs every Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm, featuring different subjects each week. Two hours was hardly enough time!! That day, I learned how Southern blues and soul drum-breaks from a band called "The Amen Brothers" shaped a whole age of hip-hop and jungle music!

The show I currently produce on KUSF is a showcase of jungle/drum 'n' bass music called Future Breaks FM. For two hours every Saturday afternoon you can check out what hip-hop, jazz and punk will sound like beyond the 21st Century! Our crew is very much inspired by the legend of renegade pirate radio in the UK -- it has ignited this culture, travelling far and wide in a very short amount of time. The technology used today to created these polyrhythmic soundscapes truly conquer our common perceptions of space and time. It amazes me over and over again...

Keep listening and supporting your community radio frequency. We represent the real.
